WHAT IS EXPECTED OF A CONCERT BAND MEMBER?
Every member of the Carmen Arace Concert Band is expected to attend all classes/rehearsals on time with an instrument, lesson book, and music. They are to wait quietly outside the band room until given instruction to enter the room. It is important that all members enter the band room with a positive attitude. When a negative attitude is brought into the room, it has an effect on each student, not just the one child with the negative attitude. If this happens, I will ask the student to step into the hallway and give them time to collect themselves and then they are able to come back into the room. If needed, I will ask the student if they want to talk about what is troubling them. The bottom line is, I would like to keep the band room a positive and safe atmosphere at all times.
Students should bring their instrument home to complete the daily practice homework. This is especially important for the weekends. Each home practice session should be thirty minutes or more daily or until the practice goal is complete. Progress cannot be made if the student is not diligent with the daily practice. The same is true if the child does not do the daily homework in the academics.
It is my intention to see to it that your child progresses at a pace that is appropriate for them. I will notify a parent/guardian if a child is not making sufficient progress or if there is a discipline problem.
The instrumental program is a graded class and all students should take this very seriously. Every child has the ability to succeed in this program. All they have to do is to complete the necessary practice. Students will be graded during each class. 60% will be for performance during class and the completion of any Google Classroom assignments. 30% will be for performance assessment. Each month there will be a grade for overall musicianship (tone quality, rhythmic knowledge, melodic knowledge, etc.). 10% will be for having materials for class (having an instrument and lesson book/music.)
